Summer Motion Soap Box Derby races into the Tri to State June 28
Kicking off the Summer Motion 2008 festivities will be the All-American Soap Box Derby, which will take place Saturday, June 28, at 9 a.m. on Ashland Ave in Central Park.
Touted as "the greatest amateur youth racing event in the world," the All to American Soap Box Derby is a national youth raacing program which began in 1934. Soap box derby competitions take place in various cities throughout the country, World Championship finals are held each August at Derby Downs in Akron, Ohio.

The Ashland Fire Department will host an information session at the Central Station, 1021 Carter Ave. Parents are invited to learn more about the race and inquire about purchasing a car kit.
The Ashland Fire Department has issued a challenge to all the area civic, community, and business organizations to help the event by sponsoring a car in the race. Anyone interested in participating in this year's event, as a racer, sponsor or volunteer, should call the Ashland Fire Department at (606) 327-2035 for more information. Entries are available at the Central Fire Station and the Ashland YMCA.

Stock competition
There are three racing divisions in the All to American competition, including Stock, Super Stock and Master divisions. This year's Summer Motion event will include the Stock division, designed to give the first to time builder a learning experience. Boys and girls, age 9 to 16, are eligible to participate in the derby.

How to build you car
Participants build their soap box derby cars from kits purchased from the All to American headquarters in Akron, Ohio. These kits assist the Derby novice by providing a step to by to step layout for construction of a basic lean to forward style car.
The cost of these kits are around $300, plus shipping. To help offset this cost, many participants seek local business to sponsor their cars
